Presentation on End of 1st year meeting - December 2011
- Indicator 5-Yr.1: By 12/2010, a learning-assessment plan in the new Freshmore Experience and the fully-web-based courses will be ready. By 07/2011, 100% of assessment instruments will have been developed.
- The Third Component of the Project: The Systematic Assessment System, [SAS] also consists of performing standard-based learning assessment. The assessment will be specifically used to generate changes in curricula and service protocols to improve the overall student experience at USC. Students will be assessed during the first three semesters through special experiences and in the summer orientation will undergo accurate placement measures. Standard-based assessment will be facilitated by a web-based Assessment Management System, Livetext, a database that produces standard aligned reports.
- An action plan and the evaluation plan have been produced after the beginning of the project in October, based on the proposal evaluation plan.
- Action plan
- In January 2011 the redesign of the course began, and with it the design of a learning assessment plan and its instruments. We have worked on the Freshmore assessment plan first because it must be ready for June 2011. The DEDOS assessment plan will then be developed, coinciding with the start of the development of the pilot in August 201,1 so it can be ready for December 2011.
- FEP learning assessment plan
- The following instruments have been produced or are under way:
- Two needs assessment instruments have been developed and administered. Results have been incorporated into course design.
- A general use rubric has been developed based on competencies from the Institutional Student Profile. It will be used for FEP and DEDOS alike, along with more specific instruments produced for individual course activities both in DEDOS and Freshmore Seminars. The general rubric is expected to produce qualitative data that can be compared to other USC projects data and to serve as a baseline for future project years.
- The surveys and tests developed by EDDY for the retention suite that we have purchased and its tools. These are surveys on topics dealing with university life, satisfaction with student services and Health & Wellness.
- Documents, surveys and rubrics produced by the DEDOS staff.
- The Fall 2010 cohort was assessed to obtain a profile of new students and to know student's priorities in services. The results of the survey were used on the curricular map for Summer Orientation, that Melissa and I developed, and for the curricular map for FEP.Also we have coordinated with the Institutional Research unit, as well as other institutional units that are working on student wellness, so our assessment efforts are aligned with institutional assessment.
- The Fall 2010 was also assessed for their experience and preference in online and distancwe education.
- By 08/2011, at least 25 faculty and counselors participating in the Freshmore Experience will have been trained to implement the assessment instruments.By 12/2011, 15 faculty trained by DEDOS will be surveyed for satisfaction.
- FEP Stakeholders, as well as faculty that will participate in the 4 courses that the students will take together, met on May 10, 2011, both for project buy-in and to decide on training dates before August 2011. This group, numbering 25, will receive training on how to incorporate data pro-duced by the instruments into their work. Faculty will learn how to use the general rubric.
- An interactive module on assessment techniques is being produced, to help faculty and staff use assessment instruments in FE 101, Summer Orientation and the fully-web courses. Professional development outside Puerto Rico is being planned for select faculty who will in turn serve as resources for the rest of participant faculty and staff.
- DEDOS faculty has already met, and training has already begun, as well as design of the courses for the pilot. Faculty will then be surveyed for satisfaction with the training and the design process.
- Examples of dedos training
- The satisfaction survey(s) are already being developed and adapted from the needs assessment instruments and the results from need assessment surveys.
