The face of first year experience

“The face of first year experience has changed dramatically over the past
decade and there is no reason to expect that this will not be the case in the
decade to come. The one constant, however, is that the first year of
university study remains arguably the most critical time for engaging
students with their learning community and equipping them with the requisite
skills to not only persist but to be successful and independent in their
learning throughout the undergraduate years and beyond”
Krause, 2005, 9.

The transition to a University is often accompanied by significant social and emotional changes. The research during the past days I found some universities of United States and Australia and their first experience project. The primary goals were to develop critical skills that promote academic success, to explore and research academic majors, and to engage in activities designed to ensure a positive transition into the academic and personal demands of university life.

I was thinking about the summer orientation activities and we should create some fun and different ways that bring experience university life style to new students.
The creation of the short courses for the summer orientation week activities, for example:

• Time management
• Goal setting
• Computer programs
• Budget management
• Stress management
• Writing skills “True ease in writing comes from art, not chance.” – Alexander Pope
