FOCUS ON: STUDENTS RETENTION

Last Thursday I attended to the "8avo Congreso de Investigación Educativa", of the "Escuela de Educación de UMET". And I want to share with you some of the investigations that capture my attention.

One was: "Factores que inciden en la retención de los estudiantes de la Escuela de Educación: los estudiantes hablan", by Ana Leticia Díaz Meléndez, researcher.

This research indicates that there is large literature on the factors so that exists desertion,but little that outlines the factors

involved in the decision to remain a student in college. It was conducted with a focus g

roup with students of 4th year of School of Education at UMET,led to a general question: What were the factors that have influenced its retention as a student at the School of Education at UMET?.
Findings: "Students who have persevered in the organization recognize the work of staffworking in the institution, services and the wishes of the UMET to fulfill its mission,maintain quality and excellence".

Discussion: "The findings of this study show that overall satisfaction in services supportive of the student, the greater the commitment and motivation to the Institution". "Students who have

prevailed in the university has set goals, they are sure about what they want to achieve, know that they have to sacrifice and and give maximum"."Institutions must be prepared to meet every need and respond in support of student services."

So, this type of research makes us think not only about making changes at the infrastructure level of the universities, but of programs and administrative level too, so that students feel comfortable in the institution that chose to make a college education.
